CENTER POINT-URBANA

HIGH SCHOOL CHAPTER’S

SELECTION PROCESS

Application Form

There is a Faculty Council put together by the Principal to serve to select members to the Center Point-Urbana High School NHS.  There are four criteria that will be used to determine membership.  The Faculty Council will consider performance in all four criteria of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

1. Scholarship

The scholarship requirement set by the National Council is based on a student’s cumulative grade point average. The phrase “cumulative grade point average “refers to the total academic performance as demonstrated by the grades received by the student while in attendance in 9th grade to the junior year.  The minimum cumulative grade point average is a 3.50.

2. Leadership

To meet the leadership criterion for NHS, a student is to name the leadership roles at school or in the community achieved since the ninth grade.  The student should indicate the roles and the name of the adult who supervised each of these activities on the Candidate Form.  There must be two verifiable listings to be selected to our chapter.

Examples exercising leadership is when her or she:

• Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities

• Exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals and spirit

• Contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school

• Is able to delegate responsibilities

• Inspires positive behavior in others

• Demonstrates academic initiative

• Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility; conducts business effectively and efficiently; demonstrates reliability and dependability

• Is a leader in the classroom, at work, or in other school or community activities

3. Service

Service is generally considered to be those actions undertaken by the student which are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or material compensation. Students should demonstrate at least two verifiable ways they have provided service since the 9th grade year (totaling at least six or more hours of service).  Six or more hours of service is required after selection, along with the participation in the large group service project by NHS.

4. Character

A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. In considering the standards set for the local character criterion, a candidate will be able to demonstrate an outstanding record of conduct and behavior with regard to school and community rules, guidelines, and policies, or be able to demonstrate sufficient growth and improvement to compensate for previous inadequacies.

The student of character:

• Consistently exemplifies positive and desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability)

• Cooperates by complying with all school policies and regulations and codes of student conduct

• Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously

• Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty, academic integrity, and reliability

• Regularly exhibits courtesy, concern, and respect for others

• Complies with instructions and rules, and displays personal responsibility.

SELECTION OF MEMBERS

The selection of active members shall be held once a year during the second semester of the school year.   Students that are juniors and seniors that meet the academic eligibility will receive a letter extending them the invitation to apply for membership into the CPU Chapter of the National Honor Society.
