Radiological Emergency, Middle School

In the event of an emergency at the Duane Arnold Energy Center (DAEC) requiring response action, Linn County Emergency Management will issue one of two recommendations via the indoor warning system and/or commercial telephone – along with the use of outdoor warning sirens and Emergency Alert System (EAS) announcements.  The indoor warning receivers are presently installed in each school. 

There are four (4) classifications of emergency.

1. Unusual Event - No Action


2. Alert   

  • notification of alert to staff
  • monitor Emergency Alert System (Principal)
  • cancel extracurricular (Principal)


3.  Site Area Emergency 

  • students return to homeroom
  • teachers take roll
  • teachers bring release slips to buses
  • students to the buses
  • teachers and students will be transported to Independence (the temporary shelter)


4.  General Emergency 

  • announcement over loudspeaker for sheltering of students
  • employees and students will proceed to interior classrooms for sheltering
  • Principal will give further instructions

The public will be kept informed by the Emergency Alert System. If at all possible, families should be united as soon as possible so the family can take the necessary precautions together.  Return to homes in the affected areas should take place only after an “All Clear” has been given.
 

Students will be transported to a pre-designated Temporary Independence Relocation Center outside the Emergency Planning Zone to await arrival of their families.


EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT RELOCATION/EVACUATION PLAN WITHIN
A 10-MILE RADIUS OF THE DUANE ARNOLD NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
Coordination between schools, transportation supervisors and local emergency services will be performed by the school Superintendent.
The superintendent will coordinate with the Emergency Management Director.
Listen to the following radio stations for information regarding a potential or impending emergency:   FM: WMT FM – 96.5 or AM: WMT AM – 600

In the event of a RADIOLOGICAL EMERGENCY at the Duane Arnold facility that requires temporary relocation of students, the following procedures will be followed for the release of students from the temporary relocation center in Independence, Iowa:
 School children will be released to PARENTS ONLY, unless the form below is returned for each child indicating another person(s) has permission to pick up the child.
 STUDENTS WHO DRIVE TO SCHOOL WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO LEAVE IN THEIR CARS.
