28 Ralph vs. Dred Scott

LAW # 1 - No slaves in Iowa

Why Can You Be Proud of Iowa When You Compare the "Case of Ralph" with the case  of "Dred Scott?"

Case of Ralph

Case of Dred Scott

The Iowa Supreme Court decided to hear and make a decision on Ralph's case.

Ralph was allowed to stay in Iowa and be free.

The U. S. Supreme Court decided they did not have to hear Dred's case because black's were not citiizens.

Dred had to go back to Missouri and be a slave.

Answers on a Scale of 1 to 4

Score = 1

It makes me proud because I know that Iowa makes good choices and wants to help people of any race or color.

Score = 2

Ralph got to be free at the end of the case and Dred didn't.  I'm proud of Iowa for handling the case like that because they treated Ralph like an actual human being while the U. S. just kicked Dred out.

Score = 3

I am proud of Iowa because when Ralph's went to the  Iowa Supreme Court they said he got to be a free man and got to stay in Iowa.  Dred's case was bad because he got sent back to go be a slave.  The U. S. Supreme Court decided not to hear Dred's case because he was a slave and slaves were not citizens.

Score = 4

When Ralph who was a slave from Missouri went to court to get permission to stay in Iowa where slavery was not allowed, the Iowa Supreme Court actually decided to hear Ralph's case.  They decided that because of the laws saying no slavery in Iowa, Ralph did not have to go back to Missouri.

When Dred Scott, who was also a slave from Missouri who lived in a free state went to the U.S. Supreme Court they would not even listen to him because he was black and not a citizen.  Dred was forced to go back to Missouri and be a slave.

Law # 2 - Right to vote if you are an African American man

1868 Iowa Law

1870 U.S. Lae

As thanks for fighting in the Civil War, Iowa gives African -American men the right to vote.

After the Civil War the U.S. gives African-Amercian men the right to vote.

I am proud of Iowa because they gave African American men the right to vote two years earlier than the United States.
